My Very First Tent: Say Hello to Pumpkin

There's no better feeling then adding to your gear library. If you know, you know.

Growing The Library

As an outdoor gear geek if you will, (for those who can relate) there's something especially exciting about adding a new piece of equipment to your gear library. It's exhilarating! Take my word for it. I had my eyes out for some time now on picking up a lightweight, affordable hiking tent. It wasn't until I finally pressed play on making an overnight hiking trip actually happen, that I finally felt the pressure to make a purchase.

Where To Start

I started doing research on my go-to brands and stores on where to consider making a purchase. Exploring brands such as North Face, MSR and Mountain Equipment Co-op, searching stores and retailers such as Atmosphere and Wilderness Supply. As much as I am an ambassador at supporting local, I have to be honest that my priority in this instance was budget. I will also admit I'm a classic procrastinator and of course I needed this tent... now. Budget and available inventory were the top two determining factors on my list. I had put out a call on Instagram asking for feed back on hiking tents and I had heard one suggestion from a friend about a company called Featherstone down in the United States. I had never head of them but figured I would look into things. I cruised their website, checked out the inventory and came across the Featherstone UL Granite 2P Backpacking Tent. I read the reviews, checked the specs of the tent and it looked to fit for what I needed. I took a chance and pressed place order.

Pumpkin's First Adventure

With a successful trial run and setup, I was ready to go on my first overnight backpacking adventure with Backcountry Women in Nopiming Provincial Park, Northern Manitoba. It was cute; when I finished setting up my tent, one of my nephews were around and loved coming in the tent to check it out. I hope to take him camping one day!

The Review

All in all? I'm very happy with this purchase. The tent was lightweight, easy to set up and kept me warm and dry all night. 2 person? Try 1 comfortably. I had enough room to keep myself and my gear dry, move around a little bit and to set up my air mattress and sleeping bag. It has two pockets on the inside for storing quick access items such as flashlight and toilet paper and the loop on the ceiling of the tent is great to hang a portable light. I felt there was enough ventilation and rolling back the fly to let a nice crisp breeze roll in... there's nothing like it. I also really fell in love with the bright orange of the tent and how the colour pops against nature and our beautiful Manitoba landscape.

Getting That Glow On

There were so many nice moments on this evening. Stories around the campfire, dinner after a long day hiking and exploring and probably my favourite, campturing pumpkin's oh so sweet evening glow. I should have mentioned in the beginning where pumpkin got it's name from. Simple really. Halloween was only a few weeks away at the time, and with the bright orange colour, it just felt right. Who knew I would be sleeping in my very own jack-o-lantern!
